I have always believed in God, but never really knew how to have a relationship with Him. I thought flipping open my Bible to a verse to hear from God in difficult times was enough. I believed that being a good person who believes in God was all that I needed to be in a relationship with Him.
I saw people who were older than I was, married, with children and assumed that to really “get it,” or understand how to know God, I had to be older and have a family of my own. I thought that was the key I needed to unlock what it would take to know God personally.
It was the first week of my freshman year of college when I met a friend who was a student, and I could tell she really knew God. I had to know more and I began spending as much time with her as I could. I became a faithful member of her small group and as I met more students in Chi Alpha, I saw how normal it was for people like me to know God intimately, to hear His voice, and to know His will. I gave my time to learn as much as I could from my new friends and felt like the questions I never knew were in my heart were being answered.
As I soaked up the Truth like a sponge and spent time with these people who knew God’s character, I began to read the Bible with a hungry heart to know God. I began to hear His direction and will for my life. Chi Alpha pointed me to the person of Jesus! John 17:3 “This is eternal life, to know the One True God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.”
